Biography
Camilla Belle Routh was born to Jack Routh, American, and Cristina Gould, Brazilian, on October 2, 1986 in Los Angeles, California. Camilla grew to be fluent in both English and Portuguese and her mother named her after actress Renata Sorrah's character, Camila, in the Brazilian soap opera "Cavalo de Aço".
Camilla began her acting career by appearing in television commercials in 1987, when she was just nine months old, after the models in her mother's aerobics class suggested she started auditioning. Her first "job" was in a Subaru ad. By the time she was starting school (she attended the independent all-girls Marlborough school), she was also getting her feet wet with appearances in numerous TV and big-screen films and also landed in her first dramatic role: a part in the made-for-TV NBC thriller, Trouble Shooters: Trapped Beneath The Earth. She had minor roles in several widely-released films, including A Little Princess and The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and played the lead in Back To The Secret Garden.
During her almost four years downtime, Belle found time to study modern language with the University of Edinburgh offering her a chance to study their modern language program.
In 2004, Belle finally landed the part that would make her a popular name with a role in the independent film The Ballad Of Jack And Rose. The film only received a limited theatrical release, but Belle was labeled an "impressive newcomer". Starring alongside such greats as Daniel Day-Lewis and Catherine Keener was a tremendous experience for the young actress, and she followed up the role with another independent venture, The Chumscrubber.
She was subsequently cast in the lead role in the horror film remake, When A Stranger Calls. The film was released on February 3, 2006 and was considered successful at the United States box office, grossing over $45 million after an opening of over $21 million. Later in 2006, she acted opposite Elisha Cuthbert and Edie Falco in The Quiet, a psychological thriller in which she plays an orphaned deaf girl who is placed in the sordid and incestuous household of her godparents and their daughter.
Shortly after the release of When A Stranger Calls, Belle was cast opposite Steven Strait in the Warner Bros. film, 10,000 BC, a prehistoric epic directed by Roland Emmerich. The film is scheduled for a December 2007 release and began filming in the spring of 2006 in South Africa, New Zealand and Namibia.
Camilla is very multiskilled and besides acting, she's also an aspiring classical pianist — you can hear her playing in The Quiet. She speaks fluent English, Portuguese and Spanish, has been actively involved in various charities and is an international spokesperson for "Kids With A Cause", created to provide a helping hand to children suffering from poverty, hunger, lack of education, neglect or abuse.
Among other works, Camilla is the face of Vera Wang's new fragrance, Princess, by Coty Prestige (2006).
